The “Heart” fund is led by the school and the local cooperation office, and initiated and mainly raised by the alumni of the School of Overseas Education, with the collaboration of the school, the government and the hospital, to provide free and hassle-free “medical assistance” to the families of the children with transportation, accommodation and surgery. ~For six consecutive years from 2014 to 2019, a total of 68 children from poor families have been assisted, with the average cost of surgery being RMB 40,000. After many years of efforts, the children in the Erskine area have received comprehensive intervention and control of their heart disease. In the paediatric cardiac surgery ward of Chest Hospital, the children who had completed their surgeries were recovering well, some shy, some enthusiastic, some curious, their little faces full of vitality. Mr. Shen Yan also brought gifts for the children, which the children were eager to open, while the parents shook hands and kept expressing their gratitude for the timely and free treatment provided by the Heart Foundation. Afterwards, Fan Xiaohong, Vice President of the Chest Hospital, and Dr Wang Xiaozhou, Chief Physician, introduced the process of conducting medical screening for hundreds of children in the Er Yuan area at the end of April, and selected ten of these poor children to be sent to Shanghai for medical treatment. Several of these children had very complicated surgeries, and the experts from the Chest Hospital held several consultations to ensure that the surgeries were carried out without fail. The representatives of the alumni and the families of the children praised the medical and nursing staff of the Chest Hospital for their excellent skills and enthusiasm, and hoped that the Chest Hospital would get better and better to benefit more heart patients. The representatives also highly praised and affirmed the management of the “Heart” Fund by the university and the hospital.
In the afternoon of July 3, 2019, Mr. Yao Yi, Secretary of the Party General Branch of the Overseas Education College of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (OECU), Mr. Yan Liang Yu, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Ding Jie, Director of Alumni Affairs, Mr. Shen Yan, Honorary President of the OECU National Education Association, Mr. Hong Shan Yin, President, Mr. Xu Lidong, Vice President, and Mr. Shen Cangjuan, Assistant Director of the Alumni Office, visited the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Department of Shanghai Chest Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Accompanied by Fan Xiaohong, Vice President of the hospital, and Wang Xiaozhou, Director of the Department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, they visited the poor children who came to Shanghai for charity surgery in Eryuan, Dali, Yunnan Province, donated by the “Heart Fund” of Shanghai Jiao Tong University initiated by the alumni of the School of Overseas Education, and inquired about the children’s post-operative conditions.
As the Chairman of Shanghai Syntrans and the Honorary President of the Overseas Education Institute’s Chinese Studies Association, Mr. Shen Yan has always adhered to the business philosophy of putting people first and treating employees well, so that the enterprise has been developing in a healthy manner.
